Activist Sonam Wangchuk announced Monday that he will call off his indefinite hunger strike if the central government accepts responsibility for recent discrepancies in the education system, specifically referencing nationwide question paper leaks. The announcement coincides with the commencement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Wangchuk, who has been staging an ongoing fast to demand education reforms and accountability, outlined three specific conditions in a social media post under which he would end his strike. The activist remains under observation at New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, where he alleges his freedom of movement and communication are being restricted by authorities. According to Wangchuk, the strike will conclude if the government takes formal accountability for education system failures, or if a delegation from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) is permitted to reach Parliament, where lawmakers from various political entities must provide assurances that the matter will be deliberated during the current session. Alternatively, should his health continue to decline, Wangchuk stated he would accept identical assurances delivered by Members of Parliament visiting him directly at the hospital.

The developments follow statements from Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, who confirmed that the activist had refused to consume fluids despite continuous hospital stays. Angmo previously approached the Delhi High Court to challenge Wangchuk’s transfer to Safdarjung Hospital, alleging illegal confinement after he was moved from the primary protest site at Jantar Mantar. The High Court, however, rejected the interim plea, stating that the evidence did not indicate unlawful detention.

The ongoing fast, which began at Jantar Mantar, is primarily directed at demanding structural changes following public irregularities surrounding national examinations, including the NEET paper leak controversy. Protesters have also called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the administrative lapses. In response to a planned march toward Parliament organized by the CJP to mark the beginning of the Monsoon Session, Delhi Police personnel have heightened security measures and maintained a strict vigil around the Jantar Mantar area. While organizers had publicly announced the demonstration, official sources indicated that formal police clearance for the march had not yet been finalized.
