Lucknow, January 3: The Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday arrested Bajrang Dal leader Yogesh Raj in connection of mob violence in Bulandshahar in December last year which left a police officer and a young man dead. Yogesh Raj was allegedly part of the mob that attacked Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh, killing him instantly.

Yogesh Raj's arrest came two days after the police arrested an accused in connection to the cow-slaughter incident on December 3, which later triggered violence in Bulandshahar. The accused identified as Kalua aka Rajiv was apprehended along with an axe. On December 27, police had arrested Prashant Nat, who allegedly shot the inspector dead after the axe attack. On December 29, the police had arrested one of the main accused in connection to the cow-slaughter incident. The accused identified as Haroon was apprehended along with a licensed revolver. An Army jawan, Jitendra Malik, was also arrested earlier. Bulandshahr Violence: BJP MLA Claims Cop Shot Himself.

Violence had erupted after cow carcasses were found in a field near Mahaw village in Bulandshahar. The policeman, who was trying to control the violent mob, was wounded in the head with a stone. As his driver bundled him into his SUV and tried to take him to the hospital, the mob followed the car, cornered it in a field and shot the police officer.

Singh died of a bullet wound below his left eyebrow, confirmed the autopsy report. A youth identified as Sumit also died of bullet wounds.
