Mamata Banerjee's Close Aide
Banerjee was regarded as a close aide of Mamata Banerjee and was a senior TMC leader in Birbhum. He served as Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly during Mamata Banerjee's tenure as chief minister.

Lost Rampurhat Seat in 2026 Election
Banerjee's long electoral association with Rampurhat ended earlier this year when he lost the Assembly election from the constituency. He was defeated by BJP candidate Dhruba Saha. Following the election, party sources said Banerjee had become less active in politics. His death comes months after a major political change in West Bengal, where the TMC lost the state election and the BJP emerged as the new ruling party.
Investigation Underway
Police have not yet established a definitive cause or motive behind Banerjee's death. Investigators are examining the scene and other available evidence. The post-mortem report and any other material recovered during the investigation are expected to help establish the circumstances of the death. Further details are awaited as the police investigation continues.
