‘Can’t Stop BJP Alone’: Asaduddin Owaisi Opens AIMIM Alliance Door Ahead of 2027 UP Polls

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has said his party is open to an alliance with political groups that want to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from returning to power in Uttar Pradesh for a third consecutive term. With the 2027 UP Assembly elections approaching, Owaisi has invited “like-minded” parties for discussions and said AIMIM is ready to work with them.

Owaisi reiterated the alliance offer while addressing political developments in Uttar Pradesh, saying no opposition party could take on the BJP alone. Owaisi Says AIMIM Ready for Alliance Talks

Owaisi said parties that want to prevent the BJP from forming the government in Uttar Pradesh again can approach AIMIM for discussions. The AIMIM chief said the party was prepared to work with groups sharing that objective. He also said that any decision regarding an alliance would be announced after October 2.

The remarks come after Owaisi had made similar overtures earlier this year, including an appeal for an understanding with the Samajwadi Party (SP). In July, he said AIMIM was ready to join hands with SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and called for talks before the election.

AIMIM Seeks Greater Political Space in Uttar Pradesh

Owaisi said AIMIM's organisation in Uttar Pradesh had strengthened and that its leaders were working at the grassroots level across constituencies. The party has been seeking to expand its electoral presence in the state ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls. AIMIM contested 96 seats in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh election but did not win a seat, with its statewide vote share remaining below 1%, according to a recent Times of India analysis. In June, Owaisi had also said AIMIM was willing to join an alliance in Uttar Pradesh if the party received equal status and was treated with respect. Owaisi Says UP Election Will Be Different

Owaisi has maintained that the upcoming Uttar Pradesh election will differ from previous polls and has been stepping up AIMIM's political activities in the state. He has also raised issues including governance, law and order, electricity and land disputes while attacking both the BJP government and the SP over their respective records. His remarks on these issues are political claims and have been contested by rival parties.

The AIMIM chief is expected to continue campaigning across Uttar Pradesh in the coming weeks as the party works to build its presence ahead of the 2027 Assembly election.

UP Opposition Politics Ahead of 2027 Polls

The alliance question is emerging as an important issue among opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Assembly election. Owaisi has previously sought an understanding with larger opposition groups, while AIMIM has also pursued alliances in other states.

In September, he said AIMIM had made a similar proposal in Bihar, where it sought six seats as part of an opposition alliance, but the proposal was not accepted. He nevertheless said the party remained open to working with other parties in Uttar Pradesh. For now, no formal alliance has been announced in Uttar Pradesh. Owaisi's latest remarks leave open the possibility of an electoral understanding with parties that share AIMIM's stated objective of preventing another BJP government in the state.
