The results of the Kalahandi Lok Sabha election will be declared today. The counting of votes began on the Parliamentary seat in Odisha at 8 am on Thursday, May 23. Voting for the Kalahandi seat took place in the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019. Kalahandi is one of the Lok Sabha Constituency of Odisha. Before delimitation in 2008, the legislative assembly segments, which constituted this parliamentary constituency were: Khariar, Dharamgarh, Koksara, Junagarh, Bhawanipatna, Narla and Kesinga. However, Following delimitation, this constituency currently comprises of seven assembly seats -Nuapada, Khariar, Lanjigarh, Junagarh, Dharmgarh, Bhawanipatna and Narta. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) fielded Pushpendra Singh Deo from Kalahandi, while Bhakta Charan Das contested on the Congress ticket. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gave the ticket to its state unit president Basant Kumar Panda from this constituency. The last date of filing nomination for the seat was March 25. The scrutiny of nominations papers took place on March 26. In 2014, BJD's Arka Keshari Deo defeated Pradeep Kumar Naik of the BJP with a margin of over 55,000 votes. Meanwhile, the sitting MP Bhakta Charan Das of the Congress came at the third spot. Politically, Kalahandi remained a citadel of the BJP. The saffron party since 1998 as it managed to won three consecutive elections in 1998, 1999 and 2004.

On March 10, the Election Commission of India announced dates for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The elections will take place in seven phases, and the results will be declared on May 23.
