Mahua Moitra Alleges BJP Workers Behind Protest
Sharing videos of the incident on Facebook and X, Moitra accused BJP workers of orchestrating the protest. "After the change of government in the state, law and order has collapsed. The police administration is a mute spectator. The BJP has now planned to attack me. These are not ordinary people; they are BJP workers," she alleged.
A video recorded by Moitra from inside the restaurant shows eggs striking the windows while she is seated with local TMC leaders and party workers. As eggs continue to hit the glass panes, she is heard alleging that BJP workers were responsible for the attack. The videos have since gone viral on social media.
Police and central security personnel reached the spot shortly after the protest began and dispersed the crowd after speaking to the demonstrators, a senior district police officer said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Second Egg Attack Alleged Within Weeks
The latest incident comes less than three weeks after another alleged egg attack targeting Moitra. On June 13, BJP Mahila Morcha workers had gathered outside the Krishnanagar district court, where the TMC MP was scheduled to appear in connection with a case, and allegedly attempted to hurl eggs at her.
Reacting to that incident, Moitra had said: "I will take action against every one of them. I will go to the police station. If the police are not with us, I will move the High Court. If necessary, I will approach the Supreme Court."
Series Of Egg Attacks On TMC Leaders
The incident is the latest in a series of protests and alleged egg attacks targeting senior TMC leaders in recent weeks following the party's defeat in the May West Bengal Assembly elections.
On June 7, residents allegedly hurled eggs at a police vehicle carrying TMC leader Sujoy Hazra in Midnapore, accusing him of collecting money from beneficiaries under a housing scheme without delivering promised homes.
The same day, eggs were also thrown at Kolkata councillors Bappaditya Dasgupta and Md Jasimuddin while they were being escorted by police in connection with criminal cases.
On June 18, TMC minister Udayan Guha was similarly targeted, while party leader Vijay Singh faced an egg attack outside an Asansol court on June 19, with protesters shouting "chor, chor."
Earlier, on May 30, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas, where he had gone to meet families allegedly affected by post-poll violence.
According to the TMC, protesters hurled eggs, stones, shoes and slippers at Banerjee's convoy. Videos from the scene showed him wearing a protective helmet after being struck by eggs, while security personnel escorted him away. His shirt was reportedly torn and his spectacles were damaged during the scuffle.
