Former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee warned that the TMC could stage dharnas outside the homes of BJP leaders in New Delhi if attacks on the party and its leaders continue.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday condemned the alleged vandalism at her party's office on Camac Street in Kolkata and accused BJP-backed men of carrying out the attack. She warned that the TMC could stage dharnas outside the homes of BJP leaders in New Delhi if attacks on the party and its leaders continue, India Today reported.
The remarks came hours after TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee alleged that armed men vandalised the office in the early hours of Thursday. Kolkata Police has arrested six people in connection with the incident and is examining CCTV footage as part of its investigation. Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Political Violence
In a Facebook Live address, Mamata alleged that BJP workers were responsible for the attack and claimed they acted with the knowledge of Kolkata Police.
She alleged that important documents and electronic equipment were taken from the office during the incident. Mamata also described the episode as evidence of what she called a worsening law and order situation in West Bengal. The TMC chief also criticised the BJP over an incident at Jadavpur University and alleged that attempts were being made to restrict her political activities. "If these atrocities on the TMC don't stop," Mamata said, her party would stage protests outside the homes of BJP leaders in Delhi.
Abhishek Banerjee Shares CCTV Footage
Abhishek Banerjee earlier alleged that a group of armed BJP supporters entered his party office around 4.30 am. He shared purported CCTV footage showing masked and helmeted men leaving the premises carrying television sets and other electronic equipment. He also alleged that office staff were assaulted and their phones were taken.
Banerjee questioned the police response, claiming that repeated calls and emails seeking assistance did not receive a response for nearly two hours. He demanded arrests and an investigation into those who allegedly planned and organised the attack.
BJP Denies Involvement
The BJP has rejected the TMC's allegations and denied any role in the vandalism. BJP MLA Sajal Ghosh described the incident as staged by the TMC and questioned why party workers were present at the office at the time.
With both parties blaming each other, the incident has triggered a fresh political confrontation in West Bengal over allegations of violence, vandalism and law and order.
Six Arrested, Police Probe Underway
A senior Kolkata Police officer said six people had been arrested in connection with the incident. Police have secured CCTV footage and are recording statements from people who were present inside the office.
The Camac Street office has been in the news in recent weeks following a dispute involving the Kolkata Municipal Corporation's removal of an allegedly illegal hoarding. Police had earlier registered an FIR against Abhishek Banerjee, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien and others over alleged resistance to municipal officials and police during the operation.
The latest incident comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal following the change of government in the state and continuing confrontation between the BJP and TMC. The investigation into the alleged attack is continuing.
