Guwahati, August 31: The final list of National Register of Citizens or NRC, prepared to weed out illegal residents from Assam, has been published in Assam. The final list of NRC will go live at nrcassam.nic.in and thefinalnrc.com. The final NRC list can also be checked at nrcdraft.in/NRCDraft, assam.mygov.in and assam.gov.in. Ahead of the publication of the final NRC, security has been tightened up across Assam, with the imposition of Section 144, which bans on the assembly of more than four people, in some public places considered sensitive.

The first part of the draft NRC, called Part Draft NRC, was published in December, 2017 and included the names of 1.9 crore people out of the 3.29 crore applicants, leaving 1.30 crore out. The final draft of the NRC contained 2.9 crore names, while 40.07 lakh were excluded. The Supreme Court had set August 31 as the deadline for publishing the final draft of the NRC. Ahead of the publication of the final NRC list, the Ministry of Home Affairs reiterated that non-inclusion of a person's name in the final list of NRC does not amount to his or her being declared a foreigner.

"Every individual left out from final NRC can appeal to Foreigners Tribunals (FTs), an increased number of which are being established," the spokesperson of MHA tweeted. The ministry assured all legal assistance to persons whose names have been wrongly excluded from the final list of NRC through the District Legal Service Authorities. Earlier this month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting on the NRC and decided to raise the time-limit for filing appeals in foreigners tribunals to 120 days from the existing 60 days.

The Assam government will also set up the adequate number of Foreigner Tribunals (FT) at convenient locations and would also make arrangements to provide legal aid to the needy people amongst those excluded from the NRC.

The Supreme Court had last month extended the timeline for the final publication of NRC from July 31 to August 31. The apex court, however, had rejected a plea to extend the NRC deadline for sample verification.
