New Delhi, August 23: Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram will remain in CBI custody as the Supreme Court deferred his petition against his arrest in connection with the INX Media case to August 26. P Chidambaram moved three separate petitions - one against his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), second against the custodial interrogation order and third for protection from arrest by Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The apex court deferred hearing on Chidambaram's pleas against his arrest and custodial interrogation, while the matter related to ED was taken up. Following arguments, the top court said Chidambaram cannot be arrested by ED till August 26. Chidambaram was sent to CBI custody till August 26 by a special court on Thursday. Chidambaram was arrested hours after the Supreme Court refused to list his plea against a Delhi High Court order cancelling his anticipatory bail for urgent hearing. The Delhi High Court had on Tuesday dismissed his anticipatory bail plea in both CBI and ED case pertaining to the INX Media case. While Chidambaram had gone missing following the high court order, his legal team moved the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail.

When his plea was not listed for urgent hearing, Chidambaram appeared at the Congress headquarters in Delhi where he denied all allegations. Following the press conference, Chidambaram headed back to his residence in the national capital. Soon after, a team of CBI appeared outside his residence, scaled the compound wall and arrested Chidambaram.
