Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday, July 7, said he would write to three major automobile manufacturers, seeking written assurances that using E20 fuel does not damage vehicle engines or significantly reduce fuel efficiency. He also said he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to make E20 fuel optional amid what he described as growing public opposition to ethanol blending.

Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal named Maruti Suzuki, Toyota Kirloskar and Hero MotoCorp, alleging that their public statements regarding E20 fuel differed from the guidance provided in vehicle owner manuals. E20 Ethanol Blending Is a Well-Planned Initiative, Says Former BPCL Official R Ramachandran.

Kejriwal said he would ask the companies to clarify their position in writing. "I will write letters to all of them... I will tell them that your owner manual says one thing, but you are saying something else. Give in writing that if the mileage of your vehicle drops by more than 10 per cent, will you compensate the customer," Kejriwal said.

He also questioned whether customers would be compensated if the use of E20 fuel caused engine damage or increased wear and tear. "If using E20 ethanol in your vehicle damages the vehicle or causes wear and tear, will you compensate for the replacement of those components?," Kejriwal added. Mahindra Confirms All Its Vehicles Are Compatible With E20 Petrol in India, Releases Statement.

Letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Kejriwal also said he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking the government to make E20 fuel optional. According to him, the request follows what he described as "strong protest" from people over ethanol blending.

Claims on Ethanol Blending

The AAP chief further alleged that the government was presenting only part of the global picture regarding ethanol-blended fuel. "This is only half the truth. In those countries, the ethanol blend is generally below E10. Ordinary vehicles can use up to E10, but not beyond that," he said.

Kejriwal argued that the government should provide greater clarity on the impact of higher ethanol blends on vehicle performance and consumer interests.

What Is E20 Fuel?

E20 fuel is petrol blended with 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. The Centre has been promoting ethanol blending to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower emissions and support domestic ethanol production.

However, its compatibility with older vehicles and its impact on fuel efficiency and engine components have remained subjects of discussion among consumers and industry stakeholders.
