In Mumbai, there has been a shortage of vegetables and fish, which has led to an increase in the price of the eggs to Rs 8 per piece as compared to the usual Rs 5, in the retail market. According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the egg consumption has shot to almost 95 lakh per day in Mumbai. The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) said in the report that the price of the egg would come down as soon as there is a regular supply of vegetables in the market.

The report states that the reason behind the sudden surge is because fishing is not allowed in the breeding season, and vegetables also do not grow during the heavy monsoon period. So usually the egg consumption rises during this period. However, to add to the woes, this time, there is also the transporters strike, which has entered its 4th day today.  Even though trucks transporting essential items like vegetables, fruits, medicine, milk are exempted from the strike, but those who want to take part can do so.

The strike has been called by their umbrella body All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC). Apart from demanding reduction in diesel prices, truckers are also against the “flawed and non-transparent” toll collection system that favours road concessioners and alleged that the time and fuel loss goes up to Rs 1.5 trillion annually on account of it. The strike has caused damage of Rs 2,000 crore in Maharashtra, while the nationwide losses are pegged at Rs 10,000 crore.

Consumers have started to feel the pinch in their pockets, and many are left worrying that with the shortage in vegetables, fish, and now the spiralling egg prices in the market, what will a common man have?
