New Delhi, Jun 27: The government is likely to repeal University Grants Commission (UGC) and appoint a new commission for higher education in across the country. The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (HRD) has prepared a draft bill to replace the UGC with a higher education commission, media reports say.

The HRD Ministry will soon make details of the draft public and has sought suggestions by July 7. According to the government, the new commission will make institutes of higher education in India more autonomous. The development came amid speculations that the government may allow foreign investment in higher education.

The government wants to scrap All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and UGC and set up Higher Education Empowerment Regulation Agency.
