Some are merely born in a nation. But there are few who are born for the nation. Among the latter were the heroes of the 1999 Kargil War, who turned the tables against Pakistan and drove the occupying enemy forces into the pre-conflict positions. On the 20th Kargil Vijay Diwas, it is essential to recall the bravehearts.

While each of the soldier who participated in the challenging war deserves to be commemorated, there are three among them who deserve special mention: Captain Vikram Batra, Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav and Captain Anuj Nayyar. Kargil Vijay Diwas 2019: Know All About Kargil War of 1999 Fought Between India & Pakistan

Also known as the Sher Shah of Kargil, Captain Batra played a critical role in recapturing Peak 5140 and Peak 4875 from the Pakistani forces. The late military officer showed exemplary courage as he neutralised a slew of Pakistani soldiers before being martyred while attempting to save his colleague's life. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.

Subedar Yadav played an instrumental role in Operation Vijay, as he successfully volunteered the task of retrieving three bunkers from the enemy's clutches on the Tiger Hill -- one of the final points from where the infiltrators were rushed out by the Indian Army during the Kargil War. The Subedar survived despite being hit by over a dozen bullets. He became the youngest-ever recipient, at age of 19, of the Param Vir Chakra.

Captain Anuj Nayyar was part of the Charlie Company which valiantly seized control of Pt. 4875 from the occupying cross-border forces. Days after retrieving the strategic peak, the infiltrators struck back. While exhibiting a valorous defence, Captain Nayyar and his team were martyred. He was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second highest gallantry award.

About The Kargil War

The Kargil war was triggered between India and Pakistan in May-June 1999 after the Pakistani army was found to having intruded into Indian territory across the LoC and occupying various strategic peaks, including Tololing Heights, Tiger Hill and Point 4875 (Batra Top), overlooking the Srinagar-Leh National Highway and targeting traffic on it.

The Indian Army launched "Operation Vijay" in May 1999 and regained the territory after evicting intruders after a fierce battle, one among the toughest in the military history of high-altitude warfare in mountainous terrain.

July 26 is observed as 'Kargil Vijay Diwas' to commemorate the victory in this conflict, but its 20th anniversary celebration would be spread over three days from July 25 to July 27.

The Defence Ministry had said that the 20th anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Diwas will be celebrated in Delhi and Drass from July 25 to 27, with numerous activities planned all over the country from the first week of July leading to the build up of the event.
