In this streaming heat, we cannot even think of stepping outside without applying sunscreen to protect our skin from the harsh rays of the sun. It has become an important essential in our daily skincare. But the sunscreen we slather on is doing incredible damage to the world’s coral reefs. And in order to save the marine environment, Hawaii becomes the first US state to pass a bill banning the sale of any sunscreens as they are harmful to coral reefs. The bill focuses on two chemicals; oxybenzone and octinoxate—that are found in many sunscreens and even notes that they “have significant harmful impacts on Hawaii’s marine environment and residing ecosystems.”

In 2015, a group of scientists conducted a research on the effects of the sunscreen UV filters at Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands. The study published in the journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, found that just a small amount of sunscreen containing the above-named ingredients, are enough to break down coral, causing it to lose its nutrients and often die. The chemicals can also encourage neurological behavioural changes in fish and also have a possible impact on the many endangered species found in Hawaii’s waters. The bill indicates that high levels of oxybenzone and octinoxate have been found at popular swimming beaches and reef areas.

As per media reports, the chemicals are used in over 3,500 of the most popular sunscreen products. Craig Downs, one of the scientists of the 2015 study was quoted by The Globe and Mail saying, “This is the first real chance that local reefs have to recover.” It also affects sea urchins and kills algae, which are the source of food for sea turtles, he said. The Hawaii State Senator, Donna Mercado Kim was quoted saying, this is “a first step to help our reed and protect it from deterioration.”

The beautiful sunshine and aquatic lives are the famous tourist attractions in Hawaii. But this measure does not ban online purchases, and tourist can bring their own to Hawaii. The National Park Service of the United States encourages visitors to use reef-friendly sunscreens, and reports suggest that have already been made available for individuals. The bill would come into effect in 2021 of the Democratic Government David Ige signs it.
