For about 5 per cent of patients with BE, their condition will progress to a kind of cancer called esophageal adenocarcinoma. Though esophageal cancer is relatively rare (about 20,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S.), it's aggressive: Only 20% of patients survive five years past diagnosis.
