The Draft Income-tax Rules 2026 propose expanding the 50% HRA exemption to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Ahmedabad. Currently limited to Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai, this change under the old tax regime would provide major relief to renters in these hubs starting April 1, 2026. Other cities will remain at a 40% exemption limit.
