Large, randomized controlled trials are considered as the gold standard for clinical trials. This, however, could not have been done for a pandemic as severe as COVID-19 which needed immediate attention. When the earlier findings suggested that the drug 'hydroxychloroquine' possessed antiviral properties against SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19), hospitals worldwide began using the drug for treating patients with COVID-19 infection.
