Asalha Puja marks the occasion when Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, at the Deer Park in Sarnath to his first five disciples. This sermon, which expounded the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, is considered the foundation of Buddhist teachings.
