Cyclone Maila has weakened to a Category 2 storm as it moves across the Solomon Sea, according to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology. Once a Category 5 system, it is expected to pass south of Papua New Guinea and may impact Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula early next week. Unfavourable conditions have reduced its intensity, though risks remain.
