In a deeply moving moment aboard Artemis II, four astronauts turned a scientific journey into a heartfelt tribute that has captured global attention. Crew members Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Hammock Koch and Jeremy Hansen are currently orbiting the Moon aboard NASA’s Orion capsule, Integrity, marking one of humanity’s most ambitious deep-space missions.
During a video shared by NASA on April 6, the astronauts revealed they had identified previously unnamed lunar craters and decided to propose names that reflect both their mission and personal bonds. Floating together in zero gravity, Hansen explained, “If you were to look at Orientale on the far side and then draw a line straight up to Ohm on the far side, relatively in the middle is an unnamed crater and we would like to suggest it be called Integrity in the future.” Artemis II Completes Record-breaking Trip Around the Moon After Surpassing Milestone.

However, it was their second naming that turned the moment emotional. Hansen continued, “We lost a loved one, her name was Carroll, the spouse of Reid, the mother of Katey and Ellie… (The crater is) a bright spot on the moon and we would like to call it Carroll.” Artemis II Mission: NASA Shares Stunning Earth Photos Shot on iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The tribute moved Wiseman to tears. As he wiped his eyes, he reached for Hansen, and soon the entire crew shared a heartfelt embrace, with Glover and Koch also visibly emotional. The touching gesture honors Wiseman’s late wife, who “dedicated her life to helping others as a newborn intensive care unit Registered Nurse.”
Social media quickly responded with overwhelming support. One user wrote, “Sounds like Carroll was loved to the Moon and back, literally,” while another added, “Her babies can look to the night sky and see their mom.”
The Artemis II crew is set to return to Earth on April 10, concluding a historic mission defined not just by exploration, but by humanity, love and remembrance written among the stars.
