Fake Letter Goes Viral
The fraudulent loan approval letter has been circulating on various social media platforms and messaging apps, purporting to be an official document from the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana. Official Debunking
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has officially debunked the specific claim about a 1 per cent interest rate for INR 2,00,000 loan under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana. According to PIB Fact Check, the letter is fake. PIB has consistently stated that PMMY is a refinancing agency and does not provide direct loans to individuals or micro-entrepreneurs. "Loans under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana can be availed through nearby bank branches, RBI-registered NBFCs, MFIs, etc," PIB said.
Furthermore, the government explicitly states that there are no upfront charges for availing a Mudra loan. Citizens are advised by PIB to rely solely on official PM Mudra Yojana loan channels and exercise caution against such deceptive practices.
Actual Mudra Loan Details
Micro-Units Development and Refinance Agency is referred to as Mudra. Contrary to the claim of a 1 per cent interest rate, actual Mudra loan interest rates typically range from approximately 8 per cent to 24 per cent per annum. This variation depends on the lending institution, the specific loan category (Shishu, Kishore, or Tarun), the borrower's credit profile, and prevailing market conditions. For example, some banks offer Mudra loans starting from around 8.85 per cent interest. The scheme provides flexible repayment tenures, usually between 1 to 7 years. While many banks waive processing fees for smaller Mudra loans (such as Shishu loans up to INR 5,00,000), certain lending institutions do charge processing fees or documentation/handling charges for higher loan slabs (such as Kishore and Tarun categories).
