Robot That Draws Blood, Checks Veins: Vitestro's Aletta Robot Performs Fully Autonomous Blood Draws in European Hospitals (Watch Viral Video)
Dutch company Vitestro’s Aletta robot is performing fully autonomous blood draws in European hospitals using AI-powered ultrasound, imaging and robotics. Already used on thousands of patients, the system has received EU CE certification and shows high first-stick success and patient acceptance, while human supervision remains necessary for complex cases.
A robotic system called Aletta is performing fully autonomous blood draws in European hospitals. The machine uses AI powered ultrasound to locate veins, insert the needle, collect the sample, remove the needle and apply a bandage without human hands.
Developed by Dutch company Vitestro, Aletta has already been used on thousands of patients. Clinical results show high first stick success rates and strong patient acceptance, with around 98 per cent saying they would choose the robot again. The device combines near infrared imaging, ultrasound and precise robotics to complete the entire procedure under supervision. It has received CE Mark certification for use in the European Union and is currently deployed in hospitals in the Netherlands, including sites in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Dordrecht.
There are roughly 130,000 phlebotomists in the United States alone, raising questions about how automation may affect the profession. Supporters note the technology can improve consistency, reduce repeated sticks and ease staff shortages, while still requiring human oversight for complex cases.
