West Indies opener Chris Gayle is playing the last match of his World Cup career. The self-proclaimed 'Universe Boss' is known for his huge sixes and flamboyant manners both on and off the field. Gayle has already made his announcement from international cricket. Howvever, the southpaw did a U-turn on his retirment announcement. The left-hander is mostly known for his blitz in T20 franchise cricket around the world but the veteran has a spectacular international cricket too.

In an interview to cricketworldcup.com, Gayle went back on his retirement plan and said that he was willing to play for West Indies ā€˜as long as possible’. ā€œI was actually thinking about it (plans after the World Cup) for a long time now.

After I made the statement, the captain Holder came and said, ā€˜Chris, if you are serious, that would be the greatest thing to happen to have you in our dressing room’ and that kind of gave me a big boost as well,ā€ said Gayle to the ICC World Cup’s official website in the interview.

The Jamaican superstar made his debut way back in 1999. He has always been a crucial part of the West Indies Cricket team. In his 20-year-old career he featured in 296 ODIs scoring 10386 runs at an average of 37.91 which also includes 25 centuries. Despite his fierce batting style, he has a great record in whites too.In 103 tests the opener has amassed a whopping 7215 runs at an average to 42.15 to go with 15 hundreds, three double tons and a triple ton too.

Gayle also became the first batsman to score a T20I ton and continued his legacy for a decade. In the shortest format of the game, Gayle has scored 1627 runs in 58 matches including two tons. Gayle has been a vital part of West Indies winning squad in the 2004 Champions Trophy and ICC World T20 in 2012 and 2016.

Unfortunately, the men in maroon had a poor World Cup campaign as they are standing at the ninth position with just 1 win from 8 games. However, Gayle has been a great ambassador of the game and would like to end their world-cup career on high.
