Dale Steyn, who is on a comeback trail, has now joined former teammate Shaun Pollock as South Africa’s leading Wicket takers in Test cricket. Steyn achieved the feat during the day three of Sri Lanka vs South Africa first Test, which the latter lost by 278 runs. Steyn, who last played for South Africa against India earlier this year, at the start of the match against Sri Lanka needed two wickets to level with Pollock’s record of 421. Steyn managed to pick just one wicket in the first innings of Sri Lanka and now on day three he scalped Lakshan Sandakan to make it 421 in his wickets column.

Sandakan, the last wicket to fell, was caught at point by Temba Bauvma as Sri Lanka were all out for 190 runs in their second innings. Steyn finished with not so impressive match-figures of 2/89. Meanwhile, South Africa faced embarrassment as they were bundled out for just 73 while chasing mammoth 352 runs to win the first Test. South Africa were undone by the Lankan spinners who shared all ten wickets between them. Dilruwan Perera claimed career-best 6/32 while Rangana Herath and Sandakan picked three and one wickets respectively.

South Africa in their first innings were bowled out for 126 after the home side scored 287. Sri Lanka then were dismissed for 190 in their second innings, but thanks to their 161-run lead the host set South Africa a daunting target to chase. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka take an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.
