Ahead of the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions, Delhi Daredevils changed their name to Delhi Capitals, hoping that the name change will bring in the change in luck. Delhi Capitals, previously Daredevils, is one of the poor performers in the league. After making it to the semifinals in IPL 2008 and 2009 editions, the Delhi-based franchise has managed to reach playoffs only once in 2012 season. Ahead of the 2019 IPL auction, apart from name change Delhi released some prominent names from their squad as well. Delhi Capitals released Gautam Gambhir, who eventually retired from the cricket. Ahead of 2019 IPL auction, Delhi Capitals traded Abhishek Sharma, Vijay Shankar and Shahbaz Nadeem for Shikhar Dhawan from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). For IPL 2019, Delhi Capitals have named Shreyas Iyer as their captain. The young batsman captained the side in the 2018 edition as well after Gambhir gave up the responsibility.
