Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, in 1936, Sobers made his first-class debut at just 16 years old before earning his Test debut for the West Indies a year later in 1954. Though initially selected primarily as a bowler, he quickly developed into an aggressive, world-class batsman and an exceptional fielder.
Sobers went on to play 93 Test matches, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and taking 235 wickets. His extraordinary talent allowed him to bowl almost any style required, ranging from left-arm fast-medium pace to slow left-arm orthodox and wrist spin.
Historic Achievements
In 1958, Sobers secured his place in cricket history by hitting an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, establishing a new record for the highest individual score in a Test innings. The historic milestone stood for 36 years until it was broken by fellow West Indian Brian Lara in 1994.
Beyond the international stage, Sobers became the first batsman in first-class history to hit six sixes in a single over. The feat was achieved in 1968 while captaining Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in Swansea, cementing his status as a global icon of the game.
