There are reports he has already won the award, and if it does turn out to be the case, it should not surprise anyone. The things that can go against him is a poor Copa America campaign where he failed to propel his Argentina side to the title. Virgil van Dijk
A constant performer for Liverpool and Netherlands, Virgil Van Dijk looks set to give Lionel Messi a run for his money when it comes to lifting the Ballon d'Or title. A complete defender in every sense, his brilliant reading of the game coupled with brute force and sublime tackling skills helped the Reds win the UEFA Champions League. He may have lost out on the UEFA Nations League to Portugal, but considering the rise of the Dutch under him, he needs to be commended. He has already won the European Player of the Year beating the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo which could go in his favour.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Portuguese skipper Cristiano Ronaldo is also in the fray to lift his sixth Ballon d'Or title, but it is highly unlikely the Juventus man will win the award. He helped his new club Juventus win the Serie A and also lifted the UEFA Nations League with Portugal, but that has done little to improve his points. A poor end to 2019 where he has been plagued by injury is also a reason he might not win the title. It will be interesting to see if the former Manchester United and Real Madrid attends the gala. It will be a real surprise if Lionel Messi fails to lift the 2019 Ballon d'Or as none of the footballers come close to beating the Argentine with the kind of individual performances he has had in the past year or so.
