"The government aims to replace the current, fragmented administrative setup at Fort St. George with a new, state-of-the-art administrative complex as the current location faces space constraints and historical preservation limitations," Chief Minister Vijay stated. The proposed integrated complex, estimated at βΉ1,200 crore, will span 20 lakh square feet, consolidating all government departments into a modern, accessible, and eco-friendly facility while preserving the heritage of the existing Fort St. George.
Olympic City to Foster Sporting Excellence
Beyond administrative upgrades, the Chief Minister detailed plans for the 'Tamil Nadu Olympic City,' an integrated, world-class sports complex. To be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority, this hub will feature international-standard sports arenas, advanced equipment, and a High-Performance Training Centre. It will also include specialised sports science and sports medicine centres, along with modern accommodation facilities for athletes and coaches.
"The Olympic City is designed to support athletes in winning medals at national and international events, creating an integrated sports ecosystem for advanced training and support," CM Vijay affirmed. The initiative aims to nurture talented athletes and strengthen Tamil Nadu's position in the global sporting arena.
Motorsports City and the Return of F1 Aspirations
Perhaps the most thrilling announcement for sports enthusiasts is the establishment of a dedicated 'Motor Sports City' in Chennai. This complex is envisioned to host high-profile events, including Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, and Formula 4 races.
Chief Minister Vijay highlighted that this facility would not only attract leading motor racing and car manufacturing companies but also provide crucial training opportunities to identify and develop young motorsport talent. This announcement gains particular significance amidst ongoing national efforts to bring Formula 1 racing back to India. The Union Sports Ministry, in June, formed a task force to explore the possibility of F1 returning to the country by 2028. The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) has also been actively pushing for India to host major global events, including F1 by 2030, alongside MotoGP and a round of the World Rally Championship by 2028.Β India Named New Hosts for Inaugural ICC Womenβs Champions Trophy in 2027.
Chennai already has a strong automobile industry base, and with the proposed Motor Sports City, Tamil Nadu is set to bolster its status as a major automotive and sporting hub, driving tourism, employment, and economic growth.
The comprehensive Chennai makeover plan reflects Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's vision for a future-ready state capital, combining administrative efficiency with world-class sports infrastructure to enhance both governance and global sporting prominence.
