That fist pump says it all from Maria Sharapova as she puts an end to the defending champion, Caroline Wozniacki’s run at Australian Open 2019. The 31-year-old Russian tennis star defeated the Dane girl in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the Rod Laver Arena in the Melbourne Park on Friday. The 30th seed had claimed the ‘underdog’ tag ahead of the mouth-watering clash with reigning champ, but she played with such grit and gusto that left Caroline looking for covers. Since beating world no. 1 Simona Halep in the opening round of US Open 2017, it was Maria’s biggest win over a top-five player since returning from the dope ban two years ago. Maria has been struggling with injuries and consistency, but not on Friday as she took on the big challenge, facing defending champion and third-seed Caroline Wozniacki. And after a gruelling two and half hour’s battle, Sharapova showed Wozniacki the door.

Maria who was meeting Caroline for their 11th encounter boasted of a slight advantage in the head to head record, 6-4 in her favour. But it proved to be of little importance as the third seed raced ahead to 4-1 in the first set. But the Russian who is known for her steely nerves and never-say-die attitude made a dramatic comeback to win the opening set 6-4. She was that good. However, just when it looked like Sharapova could seal the victory in straight sets, the Florida resident squandered chances to provide Caroline with a lifeline. The Australian Open 2018 winner levelled the match by taking the second set 6-4.

In the decider, it was Sharapova’s aggressive play vs Wozniacki’s defending prowess. And it was the former who won the set and the match after she forced a break time to take a 4-3 lead. She held her service game with a love hold, not allowing the Dane with a breathing space. With a 5-3 lead, Sharapova unleashed her famous aggressive and power show to annihilate Caroline Wozniacki and advanced to the next round. It was indeed a fantastic win for Maria Sharapova much to the delight of her fans and followers who are hoping their idol to life another major title.
