New Delhi, September 15: Google is reportedly testing a new feature for Android tablets that could change the way users multitask. The new “desktop windowing” feature will likely allow users to resize apps freely and arrange them on the screen to make the multitasking seamless. Android tablet users may be able to manage multiple tasks more efficiently with this update. Google is expected to enhance the user experience with the upcoming feature.
As per a report of The Verge, Google is testing a desktop windowing feature for Android tablets that is expected to offer a desktop-like experience. The feature is currently available as a developer preview. It allows apps to open in resizable windows with controls to reposition, maximise, or close them. Users can even have multiple occurrences of the same app open. The new mode also introduces a taskbar at the bottom of the screen, displaying all your running apps. As per multiple reports, users may have the ability to resize a window by dragging it from any part of the screen. They might also choose to hide the taskbar if they prefer. Additionally, users can double-tap the header of an app to quickly minimise or maximise it. Currently, users can try out the developer preview of the feature by using the latest Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2 on Pixel Tablets. However, it is still uncertain when this feature will be available to all users or if it will be compatible with the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The desktop windowing feature may be similar to the iPad’s Stage Manager or Samsung’s DeX, which has provided desktop-like window management on Galaxy devices for years. For those using a keyboard, they can use the shortcut meta key (Windows, Command, or Search) + Ctrl + Down to activate the desktop mode. To exit the desktop mode, users can either close all active apps or drag a window to the top of the screen.
