Huawei Mate 90: The base model with major power upgrades over Mate 80

  • Kirin 9030 brings a major graphics boost

The Mate 90 upgrades from the Mate 80’s Kirin 9020 to the Kirin 9030 chip. Huawei claims a 27% improvement in overall performance, with CPU performance up 13%, GPU performance up 54%, and NPU performance up 13%. The biggest jump is in graphics, which should help with gaming, animations, and other visually demanding tasks, while everyday apps should also feel quicker.

  • Bigger battery than the Mate 80

Battery capacity rises from 5,750mAh on the Mate 80 to 6,600mAh on the Huawei Mate 90, a nearly 15% increase. It also supports 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. The larger battery delivers all-day power for gaming, streaming, and scrolling.

  • 50MP telephoto and improved colour accuracy

The Mate 90 keeps a 50MP main and 40MP ultrawide camera, but upgrades the Mate 80’s 12MP telephoto to a 50MP telephoto lens with OIS and 4x optical zoom. Huawei also introduces its third-generation Red Maple colour camera, claiming 37% better overall colour accuracy and 62% better skin-tone accuracy than the Mate 80 series. This should make portraits and photos look more natural, even under low-light conditions.

Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max: Where power gets a premium upgrade

  • Kirin 9050 Pro pushes performance further

The 16GB RAM Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max and Collector’s Edition use the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, while the 12GB RAM model uses the standard Kirin 9050 chip. The Pro chip uses a 9-core, 16-thread “logic-folding” design, which helps it handle more work at once. This delivers 31% better overall performance, including 23% faster multi-core CPU performance, 40% better GPU rendering, and a 140% jump in NPU performance for AI tasks, smoother multitasking, faster AI features, quicker photo processing, and more stable performance.

  • 200MP telephoto lens and stronger stabilisation

The Pro Max gets a 50MP main camera with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor and variable f/1.4-f/4.0 aperture, paired with a 200MP telephoto camera with OIS. Huawei also rates the camera system at CIPA 7.5 stabilisation. The larger sensors and stronger stabilisation should help with cleaner night photos, more detailed zoom shots, and less blur when shooting handheld.

  • Larger dual-layer OLED with wider colours

The Pro Max uses a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display, compared to the Mate 90’s 6.75-inch standard OLED panel. Both support an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate, but the Pro Max also covers the wider BT.2020 colour gamut. The larger panel offers more room for videos, games, and photo editing, while the wider colour range shows more shades in supported HDR content.

  • 6,800mAh battery with faster 100W charging

The Pro Max increases battery capacity to 6,800mAh, only 200mAh more than the Mate 90. The bigger upgrade is charging speed, which rises from 66W to 100W (wired). The extra capacity should add some battery life, but faster wired charging will likely be more noticeable when you need a quick top-up.

Huawei Mate 90 or Mate 90 Pro Max: Which one makes more sense?

The choice mainly depends on how much performance and premium hardware you actually need.

  • Huawei Mate 90: A better fit for buyers who want the core Mate 90 experience with the Kirin 9030, strong battery life, and upgraded cameras, without paying extra for the Pro Max features.

  • Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max: Better suited to buyers who want stronger Kirin 9050-series performance, a 200MP telephoto camera, a larger dual-layer OLED display, and faster 100W charging support.
