Canadian financial technology firm Neo Financial has announced a major corporate restructuring, cutting 102 positions - amounting to roughly 10 per cent of its total workforce - across nearly every department. In a transparent communication shared internally and publicly via a LinkedIn update, CEO and co-founder Andrew Chau took full responsibility for the strategic direction that led to the downsizing, citing a need to streamline operations after years of rapid expansion.

Streamlining Operations and Refocusing Strategy

Addressing the company's growth trajectory, Andrew Chau explained that building multiple initiatives simultaneously had introduced organisational complexity and slowed execution. MultiCare Health System Layoffs: 138 Employees Affected Across Washington State; Check Impacted Roles and Job Titles.

We Said Goodbye to Colleagues Who Helped Build Neo, Says Andrew Chau

“As we grew rapidly over the years, building almost everything at once meant complexity crept in and everything moved slower, while great people worked tirelessly covering too much ground,” Chau stated. The company emphasised that the workforce reduction is not a retreat from its core mission, but rather a strategic pivot to concentrate resources on primary financial services. Moving forward, Neo intends to prioritise helping Canadians manage everyday money, improve credit, build savings, and navigate the path toward homeownership.

"Today is not about shrinking our ambition. It's about being laser focused on delivering what Canadians need... We're going to build fewer things faster, and build them exceptionally well,” Chau added.

Support for Departing Employees and Security Protocols

Acknowledging the personal impact on the organisation, Neo confirmed that departing staff members are receiving comprehensive separation packages. "Leaving teammates are receiving severance, extended benefits coverage, waived equity cliff for those who haven’t hit their cliff yet, and career transition support. For anyone leaving who wants it, we’re helping them find their next role, and I’re personally making introductions across my network,” Chau noted. IG Group Announces Major Layoffs and Workforce Reorganisation Following USD 1.3 Billion Underdog Acquisition.

Due to the handling of sensitive personal financial data for millions of customers, building access, IT systems, and internal accounts for affected personnel were deactivated promptly following the morning huddle announcements—a step leadership acknowledged could feel abrupt but remains necessary under strict data governance compliance. In a post on LinkedIn, Chau said, "Today, we said goodbye to colleagues who helped build Neo.  It’s the hardest day we’ve had as a company."
