OpenAI has begun rolling out its latest and most powerful artificial intelligence model, GPT-6 (also known as Astra), to select customers, incorporating heightened safeguards to address emerging security risks.

Rollout and Availability

The release comes just over a year after the launch of the company's previous flagship model, GPT-5. Some cybersecurity customers gained access to the new model, with a broader rollout to paying subscribers scheduled to follow. Users on the free tier or entry-level paid plans will not receive immediate access. Why OpenAI Astra Crosses Critical Cybersecurity Threshold and Demands Advanced AI Safeguards? Check Details.

We Are Working Towards Getting Astra in Everyone's Hands

"We are working towards getting Astra in everyone's hands as quickly as we can; I know it is frustrating and I appreciate the patience. It should be quick," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on social media.

Capabilities and Autonomous Agent Tasks

According to OpenAI's technical overview, Astra can autonomously manage a broad array of complex computer-based tasks, including website creation, scientific analysis, software development, coding, and cybersecurity operations. Demonstrations highlighted the model's efficiency, noting it can reduce extensive multi-step workflows - such as apartment hunting - from six hours to under ten minutes.

Company leadership noted the monumental shift represented by the new release. "It's not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the AGI era," OpenAI President Greg Brockman told reporters, referencing artificial general intelligence, reports AFP.

Security Safeguards and Risks

The deployment follows increased industry scrutiny regarding advanced AI capabilities. OpenAI previously paused model development for two weeks over the summer following an internal security breach involving an external platform. Although Astra was not implicated in that event, the company stated that the model was developed with reinforced protective measures. OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki acknowledged lingering uncertainties regarding model behaviour post-release, noting that systems can occasionally act in ways counter to user intent.

Addressing the decision to release a model carrying such risks, Altman explained during an interview with Bloomberg TV: "The world is very close to a complete change in the landscape of cyber attacks, and the only way that we see for society to collectively defend itself... is to use tools like Astra to rapidly defend against these new cyber threats." ChatGPT for Healthcare Connects Electronic Health Records and Public Data to OpenAI.

Industry Coordination and Regulatory Scrutiny

The launch coincides with a broader push for sector-wide safety standards. Last week, OpenAI, Anthropic, and over 100 other organisations signed an open letter calling for a coordinated global response to AI-related cybersecurity risks. Meanwhile, regulatory oversight continues to intensify. The state of Alabama recently initiated an inquiry into OpenAI regarding past security lapses, citing concerns over corporate oversight as developers race toward expanding commercial operations and upcoming public market plans.
