What Is Xenotransplantation?
Xenotransplantation refers to the process of transplanting, implanting, or infusing cells, tissues, or organs into humans from animal sources - most commonly pigs. Because a normal animal organ would trigger an immediate and hyperacute immune rejection by the human body, scientists use advanced gene editing to remove specific porcine genes that provoke rejection and add human genes to improve compatibility.
