Two utility poles collapsed onto parked vehicles in New York City's Coney Island neighbourhood on Wednesday morning, July 15, sparking a fire that damaged multiple cars and left hundreds of customers without electricity. Authorities said no injuries were reported, but the incident caused significant property damage and disrupted power to nearby residents.

The collapse occurred shortly after 7 am near West 36th Street and Surf Avenue, where firefighters responded to flames after the poles fell across parked vehicles. Con Edison crews were dispatched to restore electricity and investigate the cause of the incident, which remained unclear as of Wednesday morning.

Fire Erupts After Utility Poles Collapse

Video from the scene showed thick smoke rising into the air as firefighters worked to extinguish flames that broke out after the poles came down.

One utility pole landed directly on a parked vehicle, crushing several cars beneath it. A transformer was also seen resting on another vehicle farther along West 36th Street. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), four vehicles were damaged and one vehicle exploded, causing additional property damage.

Hundreds Lose Power

The collapse disrupted electricity supply across the area. Con Edison said 299 customers remained without power on Wednesday morning. The utility company said it expected service to be restored to the remaining customers by noon. Power had already been restored to a critical care facility and a nearby school by 9:30 am, according to the utility.

Officials have not yet determined what caused the utility poles to collapse. Con Edison crews remained at the scene carrying out repairs while a section of West 36th Street stayed closed to traffic during the investigation. Authorities also noted that the incident occurred as windy weather and rising temperatures affected the area.

Despite the dramatic collapse, officials said no injuries were reported. Emergency responders secured the area while firefighters extinguished the blaze and utility crews worked to restore power and ensure public safety. The investigation into the cause of the collapse remains ongoing.
