Jailed Bangladeshi Hindu monk and minority rights leader Chinmoy Krishna Das was granted five-hour parole to attend his mother's funeral, days after his family said authorities had denied a request to allow him to visit her while she was critically ill. Das attended the last rites of his 71-year-old mother, Sandhya Rani Dhar, at Pundarik Dham in Chattogram before returning to jail. Videos circulating on social media showed an emotional Das crying and touching the feet of a Radha-Krishna idol during his brief time outside prison, according to a report.
Parole Granted After Mother's Death
According to reports, Das's family had sought conditional parole to allow him to visit his ailing mother. However, the request was reportedly denied as authorities said there was no provision for granting parole to visit a sick relative. After Sandhya Rani Dhar died on Thursday, Chattogram District Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia granted Das five hours of parole to attend her funeral. Mother Could Not See Jailed Son
Das's family said his mother had wished to see her son before her death. His brother, Anjan Kumar Dhar, said Das was unable to meet his mother while she was alive. The family has said Sandhya Rani Dhar had been deeply distressed over her son's prolonged incarceration and legal troubles.
Das Remains in Jail Despite Bail in Some Cases
Chinmoy Krishna Das, a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jot, was arrested in November 2024 on sedition charges over allegations of disrespecting Bangladesh's national flag. He is facing six criminal cases and has reportedly secured bail in four of them. However, he remains in custody because of other pending cases.
