New York, July 9: In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old student from India's Andhra Pradesh drowned after falling into Barberville Falls in Albany in the New York state, US, on July 7. The victim, Sai Surya Avinash Gadde, a student at Trine University in Indiana, visited the waterfall with his elder sister’s family when the accident occurred.

The Consulate General of India in New York expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Mr. Sai Surya Avinash Gadde, a student at Trine University, who drowned on 7th July at Barberville Falls, Albany, NY,” the mission posted on X. Gadde Enrolled Into US University Last Year

Gadde’s LinkedIn profile says he began his studies at Trine University in the 2023-24 academic session. The incident occurred while he was visiting a friend’s house with his sister’s family, who then decided to see the nearby waterfalls.

More Than Dozen Indian Students and Others Lost Lives in US

This tragedy adds to a series of unfortunate incidents involving Indian students in the US. In 2024 alone, more than half a dozen Indian students and others have lost their lives. In response to these incidents, the Consulate General of India in New York has developed a special platform to support Indian students studying in the US. The Consulate added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
