A 20-year-old Singaporean student whose sudden disappearance sparked an international search after she boarded a flight to Cambodia instead of going to college has been located safely. Siti Aishah Siregar left her family home on July 28 claiming she was heading to Nanyang Polytechnic. Hours later, her family discovered her passport was missing and uncovered an email flight confirmation to Phnom Penh in Cambodia, prompting intense concern and an emotional public appeal. Cambodian authorities subsequently traced her to the capital's Toul Kork district, confirming she was unharmed and that no criminal coercion was involved.
The Disappearance and Family’s Urgent Appeal
According to the teenager's eldest brother, Syafiq Siregar, Aishah informed her mother at around 11 am on July 28 that she was travelling to campus as usual. Concerns mounted when family members arrived at the college at about 5 PM to pick her up, only to find her mobile phone unreachable and her messaging accounts deactivated. Singapore Student Siti Aishah Siregar Says She Travelled to Cambodia Voluntarily
Her father, Sahat Siregar, issued an emotional appeal on Facebook on July 30, urging authorities in Singapore and Cambodia to intervene. "We are afraid that every hour we lose could make it harder to bring her home safely," he wrote, adding, "As a father, I am begging for your help. I just want my daughter to come home safe", reports Times of India.
Investigation and Voluntary Travel Confirmed
Following formal police reports lodged in Singapore, law enforcement coordinated with international counterparts. The Cambodian Ministry of Interior confirmed that local immigration and police located Aishah at TK Avenue in Phnom Penh, reports Stomp. Cambodian officials stated that investigations revealed no evidence of unlawful detention or kidnapping. According to authorities and subsequent statements, Aishah explained that she travelled voluntarily due to emotional stress and a desire for independence from strict family controls.
Siti Aishah Siregar Returns Home, Her Brother Confirms
She said she came to Cambodia with plans to become an English teacher. "That is why... I decided to leave on my own and come to Cambodia (to work) as an English teacher," she said. Local reports and family accounts noted that she met an online gaming acquaintance upon arrival, and she later expressed intentions regarding overseas employment, reported the Economic Times. Following the intervention, the Singapore Police Force confirmed her safety, and consular support was extended to facilitate her return home.
Meanwhile, her family said that Aishah has returned home to Singapore. Aishah’s brother, Muhammad Syafiq Siregar, stated on his Facebook account on Aug 2. In it, he also revealed that their father's social media accounts had been suspended.
