Allegations of Mistreatment Surface Online
The dispute began after a woman posted a detailed account of her experience on the social media platform Threads. According to her post, she and her husband visited the UTC Pudu Sentral branch to apply for a first-time passport. During the visit, she took a passport cover, assuming it was included as part of the standard application process.
The user alleged that officers subsequently accused her of theft and brought the couple into a private room, where they were questioned by approximately ten officers. She claimed she was repeatedly interrupted when trying to clarify the misunderstanding and was presented with two choices: be taken to a police station or submit a written confession. In a public statement, Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban confirmed that investigators examined CCTV footage, reviewed counter transaction records, and interviewed duty personnel present during the event. The investigation concluded that several claims detailed in the social media post did not match the timeline and interactions captured on video and system logs, according to local media reports.
"The department takes this matter seriously to ensure the actual situation can be established based on verified facts," Zakaria said, explaining the decision to hand the matter over to law enforcement.
