"In Shahada, where our Social Welfare hostel is currently located, 40 children have been diagnosed with a mix of food poisoning and gastritis. Twenty-five of them are hospitalised. Twenty are at the Rural Hospital in Shahada, and five children had some oxygen and blood pressure issues, so they have been admitted to the ICU. All 25 children are stable at this point of time, and I'm taking regular updates from the doctor," Sethi told reporters yesterday.
She said most of the students admitted to the Rural Hospital had stabilised and were likely to be discharged after observation.
"Most of the children at the Rural Hospital here have also stabilised. They've been kept there for 24 hours and will be discharged. Arrangements are being made for the parents' accommodation and food," she said.
The District Magistrate said food and vomit samples had been collected for laboratory examination to determine the cause of the illness.
"Food samples have been taken, and some vomit samples have also been taken for testing. Based on that lab result, we can determine accountability," she said.
Sethi further said that responsibility would be fixed after the inquiry and action would be taken against those found negligent.
"We're also working on fixing accountability for the Headmaster, the Social Welfare Officer, and the Warden. The police team is also present here, and we're coordinating with the police station to address the concerns of the parents," she said.
She added that the district administration would review the hostel's functioning and strengthen facilities over the next two months.
"In the next two months, we'll go to the hostel and address the issues thoroughly. We'll also allocate more money from the district funds and map out any shortcomings with the parents. I'll also review this myself every 15 days until this system is set up," Sethi said.
Further investigation into the incident is underway, and authorities are awaiting the laboratory test reports. (ANI)
