What Is E85 Petrol Which Will Be INR 20 Cheaper Than E20?
The government is introducing E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles at a price INR 20 per litre lower than E20 petrol. Minister Hardeep Singh Puri dismissed concerns over engine damage and warranty issues, calling them misrepresentations. The initiative supports India's ethanol blending goals to reduce crude imports, boost the agricultural economy, and foster energy self-reliance.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has announced that the government plans to expand the availability of E85 fuel - a blend containing up to 85 per cent ethanol - offering it at a price approximately INR 20 per litre lower than standard E20 petrol. This high-ethanol blend is intended exclusively for use in purpose-built flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), marking a significant step in India's broader biofuel policy.
Expanding the Ethanol Infrastructure
The initiative is part of a major push toward energy self-reliance and cleaner transportation. Following an initial rollout at 48 retail outlets, the government has laid out an ambitious expansion plan to increase accessibility. According to official projections, E85 fuel is expected to be available at 500 retail outlets by December 2026, with plans to scale up to approximately 5,000 outlets by the end of 2027. India Launched E85 Fuel for Flex-Fuel Vehicles, Says Hardeep Singh Puri
Look closely at the timeline, and the pattern becomes difficult to ignore. India imports more than 85% of its crude oil and accounts for 30% of oil demand growth globally.

Minister Puri highlighted that the ethanol blending programme has already delivered substantial economic benefits, including foreign exchange savings exceeding INR 1.84 lakh crore and a significant reduction in crude oil imports. So what is E85 petrol?
All About E85 Petrol
E85 petrol is a high-level biofuel blend consisting of approximately 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent gasoline. Produced from renewable agricultural sources like sugarcane and corn, it is designed exclusively for use in purpose-built flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs). Because ethanol has a lower energy density than pure gasoline, E85 generally results in lower fuel economy, but it offers a higher octane rating, helps reduce dependence on imported crude oil, and produces cleaner tailpipe emissions.
Addressing Public Concerns
In a recent interview, Minister Puri dismissed reports of widespread mechanical damage and consumer resistance linked to ethanol-blended fuels as a "misrepresentation". He noted that E20 fuel has been in use across India for nearly two years, powering millions of two-wheelers and four-wheelers without systemic issues. Regarding consumer concerns over vehicle performance, the minister acknowledged that while ethanol has a lower calorific value, the impact on mileage is "minor". He further assured the public that previous concerns regarding vehicle warranties and insurance coverage have been resolved, stating, "A lot of rumours were being spread regarding the warranty issues, and many insurance companies said they wouldn’t be covering the costs, but all of that is sorted now". Strategic Vision for Biofuels
The government views the shift toward higher ethanol blends as a key component of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision, intended to reduce dependence on imported crude, support domestic farmers, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Minister Puri emphasised that the ethanol programme is a carefully phased transition. He clarified that other blends, such as E25, are still in the testing phase, and reiterated the government's balanced approach toward multiple clean energy technologies, including electric vehicles.
