Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 29 (ANI): BJP MLA Kishore Nath expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in the Assam floods, describing the incident as tragic, emphasising that no one could have foreseen the disaster.
Speaking to ANI, the BJP MLA said that this is the first time flooding has occurred in the Upper Assam region. He further declared that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is doing everything necessary to provide support to the people by ensuring the availability of all facilities and resources across the state.

"It is truly tragic; no one could have foreseen this incident. It is a disaster, and disasters strike without warning... It happened suddenly; that area had never experienced floods before. This was the first time I, too, heard of flooding in that region. Many people lost their lives in the floods, and we deeply regret this; we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to their families. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, is doing everything necessary to provide support. From day one until now, he has been ensuring that all facilities and resources are made available to the people. Additionally, the BJP is actively involved in relief efforts... You have also likely seen numerous NGOs, clubs, and organisations stepping up to help in the wake of this deeply distressing event..." said MLA Kishore Nath.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the devastating Assam floods has climbed to 75, with seven more fatalities reported from Sivasagar district yesterday.

According to the latest report from the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) as of July 28, all seven recent deaths occurred due to drowning in Sivasagar. Currently, seven districts--Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Kamrup (Metropolitan)--remain severely affected by the deluge.
The floods have impacted a population of 3,32,639 across 622 villages in 21 revenue circles. Agricultural damage remains extensive, with 45,341.98 hectares of crop area currently submerged. The Dhansiri river at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger level, though no rivers have yet crossed the highest flood level mark.
Amid a rising death toll in Assam due to floods, Congress leaders have criticised the BJP government's management of the flood situation in the state and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to visit the flood-hit region.
Congress MLA Dr Joy Prakash Das has urged the BJP-led government to provide ₹10 lakh in compensation to the families of those deceased in the floods and has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to visit the flood-hit region.
"The situation seems likely to worsen; the death toll has already reached 75 and is steadily rising. It is deeply distressing to lose our fellow citizens in what is essentially a massive disaster, a catastrophe. We are heartbroken over the lives lost and demand that the government provide ₹10 lakh in compensation to the families of the deceased... As Congress MLAs, we are contributing our last month's salaries to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund today. I demand that the Prime Minister and Amit Shah visit the affected areas to witness the current plight of the people..." Das told ANI.
Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Wazed Ali Choudhury has declared that the death toll in the Assam floods is expected to rise further.
"We already knew that the number of deaths, which stood at 68 yesterday, would rise. It has now reached 75, and the figure is expected to increase further," Choudhury told ANI.
Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar hit out at the BJP government over its handling of the flood situation in the state, stating that the opposition has been raising the issue of Assam floods since day one and that the death toll is expected to increase further.
Demanding immediate action, Sikdar said they have been urging the administration from the beginning to address the situation with seriousness and had urged the government to deploy NDRF teams for rescue operations in the state.
"We have been speaking about this from day one; the death toll is likely to rise further... We have been urging the authorities to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves from the very beginning and to deploy India's expert NDRF teams for the rescue operations. It is disheartening that, despite the dire situation and the ongoing work, not a single minister from the Central Government has visited the site..." Sikdar told ANI.
Meanwhile, following the surge in fatalities, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a major relief package for the affected population.
Under the new relief measures, the state government has waived the post-mortem requirement for the disbursement of Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia in flood-related deaths. In a significant move, the Chief Minister announced an additional Rs 5 lakh from the CM Relief Fund for the families of the deceased, bringing the total assistance to Rs 9 lakh.
Families of persons missing for over 30 days will also be eligible for Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia. To provide immediate relief to the displaced, over one lakh severely flood-affected families will receive Rs 15,000 in cash for essential needs. (ANI)
