Ballia (UP), Jan 17 (PTI) A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide following harassment over dowry in Maniyar, police said on Tuesday.

Urmila Sahni, who got married to Chandan Sahni of Elasgarh village last February, allegedly hanged herself at her in-laws' home on Monday night, they said.

The police have sent the body for post mortem.

An FIR has been lodged against five persons, including her husband Chandan Sahni, father-in-law Jairam Sahni and mother-in-law Sonapati Devi, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Dowry Prohibition Act on the basis of the victim's father's complaint, Maniyar police station SHO Praveen Singh said.

Chandan Sahni and Sonapati Devi have already been taken into custody, he said.

The victim's father alleged that his daughter was being harassed over dowry because of which she committed suicide, Singh added.
