Hyundai Small Electric SUV Codenamed HE1i to Launch in India in Q1 2027
Hyundai is expected to launch its compact electric SUV, codenamed HE1i and reportedly named Ioniq P, in India in Q1 2027. Based on the E-GMP (K) platform, it will be manufactured in Tamil Nadu and may offer a driving range exceeding 400 km. Expected features include Level 2 ADAS and Pleos Connect infotainment. It will rival the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Kia Syros EV.
Hyundai Motor India is preparing to expand its zero-emission lineup with the introduction of a new small electric SUV, codenamed HE1i, in the first quarter of 2027. Media reports indicate that the upcoming sub-compact electric vehicle will be named the Hyundai Ioniq P, bringing the brand's global Ioniq moniker to a more accessible price segment in the domestic market.
The timeline follows official confirmations made during the automaker's third-quarter 2026 financial earnings presentation on October 29. As per a report by CarLelo, management confirmed that the small electric SUV will roll out in India shortly after the launch of the Hyundai Bayon. Platform Details and Local Manufacturing Strategy
The Hyundai Ioniq P is currently undergoing real-world road testing across Indian conditions. It is built as a born-electric model using the modular E-GMP (K) architecture, which also underpins the global Hyundai Inster EV. Production will take place at Hyundai's manufacturing plant located at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.
To optimize cost structures and localization over time, initial units will utilize imported battery cells. However, Hyundai has partnered with Exide Industries to source locally manufactured battery cells, with supply integration expected to commence during 2027 under a joint Hyundai-Kia supply initiative.
Expected Battery Performance and Feature Package
The electric SUV is anticipated to be available in Standard Range and Long Range configurations. While the global-spec Inster features 42 kWh and 49 kWh battery packs, the India-bound model could share battery specifications with the Kia Syros EV, potentially delivering a real-world driving range exceeding 400 kilometres on a single charge. Once launched, the boxy-styled EV will compete against established rivals including the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, and Kia Syros EV.
