Volkswagen India Layoffs: Automaker To Cut 12% of Workforce by 2027 in Major Cost Overhaul
Volkswagen India is accelerating its restructuring to cut about 12 per cent of its workforce by 2027, aiming to lower costs and fund new vehicle investments amid potential ownership changes with JSW Group. 'While we do not comment on speculative figures regarding our workforce, our ongoing efforts to optimize operations across our Indian business units continue to gain momentum', Piyush Arora said.
Volkswagen India is accelerating its ongoing internal restructuring program, targeting a reduction of approximately 12 per cent of its domestic workforce by 2027 to lower operating costs ahead of its upcoming product investment cycle.
Accelerated Cost-Cutting and Workforce Reductions
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. initiated its restructuring process in 2025, but the German automaker has now fast-tracked the timeline to implement reductions in quicker phases through 2027. Volkswagen Layoffs: 1,00,000 Job Cuts Approved in Historic Auto Industry Restructuring.
The plan is set to eliminate a few hundred roles across both white-collar corporate positions and shop-floor manufacturing operations, reports ET Now. The initiative is designed to save tens of millions of dollars, establishing a leaner financial base as the company prepares to roll out its next generation of vehicles, including upcoming electric models.
Strategic Context and Leadership Response
Despite operating in India for more than two decades, the automaker has experienced challenges in building significant domestic scale compared to major competitors. The current domestic cost optimisation runs separate from Volkswagen’s broader global overhaul. Piyush Arora, managing director and CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, addressed the restructuring efforts while declining to confirm specific staffing projections.
“While we do not comment on speculative figures regarding our workforce, our ongoing efforts to optimize operations across our Indian business units continue to gain momentum,” Arora said. Arora added that the company anticipates expanding its local engineering team and increasing investments, maintaining India as a critical manufacturing, engineering, and export hub for the global group. Additionally, the structural adjustments coincide with discussions regarding a potential change in ownership, as Volkswagen reportedly nears an agreement that could bring in fresh capital and grant billionaire Sajjan Jindal’s JSW Group a controlling stake in the local business.
