Axis Bank, India’s third-largest private-sector lender, plans to step up campus hiring to around 12,500 in 2026-27 from 11,500–11,600 in 2025-26, even as artificial intelligence adoption and workforce reorientation reshape operational roles. According to Rajkamal Vempati, group head of human resources at Axis Bank, the strategic focus remains centered on early-career talent development despite broader technological shifts across the financial sector.

Expanding Campus Intake and Early Talent Strategy

The bank’s overall employee base moved from 104,453 down to 101,337 during FY26, despite bringing in 31,665 new employees over the course of the year through various channels, reports Business Standard. Telangana: Axis Bank Employee Found Dead in Apartment, Family Alleges Harassment by Husband.

“From a campus perspective, we are the largest consumer of young talent. We would have hired 11,500–11,600 people in FY26, and this year we will be at 12,000–12,500. The numbers are increasing. Our entire bet is to get people young, train them, assimilate them, and grow them adequately,” Vempati noted.

Navigating AI and Redeploying Workforce Roles

While emerging automation technologies alter traditional back-office functions, the lender is prioritizing staff redeployment over direct job cuts, gradually phasing out redundant positions as vacancies are naturally reassessed. “The roles that would have been extinguished would be in some transaction processing, low-level stuff that we feel technology has been able to do,” Vempati explained.

Consequently, human capital is being channeled toward commercial banking, wealth management, and micro, enterprise portfolios. These areas depend heavily on empathy, complex problem-solving, and relationship management—functions considered relatively resistant to automation. Attrition at the bank also eased to 22.4 percent in FY26 down from 25.5 percent the prior year, bolstered by enhanced mobility and modern internal processes. PhonePe Hiring: Fintech Major To Add 20,000 Frontline Staff; Here's Why.

Internal Mobility and Technology Integration

Internal career platforms like "Thrive" leverage algorithms to match employees with open internal opportunities, significantly lowering mobility timelines and driving internal career transitions. Technology-specific campus recruitment will make up a targeted portion of the intake - roughly 150 to 200 roles out of 12,000 - with broader hiring concentrated across business-facing divisions, risk, compliance, and cybersecurity. Furthermore, productivity tools like the Siddhi platform provide agents with real-time prompts and interaction analytics, lifting daily efficiency metrics.

Addressing the broader evolution of the workplace, Vempati emphasized that automation alters job compositions rather than simply erasing positions: “I feel 15–20 per cent of the tasks will go away and 20 per cent new roles will emerge in areas like AI tech governance, AI Centre of Excellence value delivery and governance, and data governance. Newer roles are emerging.”
