Jio Platforms IPO Breaks Records Across All Investor Categories, Says Akash Ambani at Q2 FY27 Earnings Call
Jio Platforms Managing Director Akash Ambani on Friday, October 30, said the company's blockbuster initial public offering (IPO) broke records across all investor categories, reflecting strong confidence among domestic and international investors.
Jio Platforms Managing Director Akash Ambani on Friday, October 30, said the company's blockbuster initial public offering (IPO) broke records across all investor categories, reflecting strong confidence among domestic and international investors. Speaking during the company's Q2 FY27 earnings call, Ambani highlighted the unprecedented response to the public issue, which marked a major milestone in Jio Platforms' journey as a listed company.
Ambani said the IPO attracted strong participation from qualified institutional buyers (QIBs), non-institutional investors, retail investors, high-net-worth individuals (HNIs), employees and existing Reliance Industries shareholders.
He also highlighted the participation of global technology companies and technology-focused investors, describing their interest as an encouraging sign of recognition of Jio Platforms as a technology company rather than just a telecommunications operator.
The IPO, which opened for subscription on October 21 and closed on October 23, raised approximately Rs 30,213 crore, making it India's largest-ever public offering. The issue was subscribed 22.19 times overall, with investors placing bids for shares worth approximately Rs 4.90 lakh crore.
The qualified institutional buyers' (QIB) category witnessed particularly strong demand, with subscriptions reaching 70.55 times the shares reserved for the segment. The non-institutional investor category was subscribed 14 times, while the retail portion received 2.72 times subscription.
The offering also set a new record in terms of investor participation, attracting more than 1.38 crore applications, the highest for an Indian IPO. The issue was fully subscribed within approximately 100 minutes of opening, underlining the scale of investor interest.
The strong response came despite challenging conditions in the Indian equity market and significant foreign investor outflows. Ambani said the participation of international and domestic institutional investors, along with technology-focused funds, was particularly encouraging.
Jio Platforms made its stock market debut on October 28, listing at Rs 1,358 per share on the NSE, a premium of around 21.3% over its issue price of Rs 1,119. Its market capitalisation stood at approximately Rs 12.5 lakh crore at the time of listing.
The IPO's record-breaking response coincides with Jio Platforms reporting strong financial performance in its first quarterly results as a listed company. For the second quarter of FY27, the company reported a 13.7% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 8,387 crore. Revenue from operations rose 11.4% to Rs 40,475 crore.
Ambani described the IPO as an important milestone rather than the culmination of the company's growth journey, indicating that Jio Platforms would continue focusing on technology investments and long-term value creation.
The company is also looking to expand its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI), satellite communications and 6G technology as it seeks to strengthen its position in India's growing digital economy.
