SBI Announces 45-Minute UPI Outage on September 4; What Customers Need To Know

State Bank of India (SBI) has issued an advisory warning customers of a scheduled 45-minute outage affecting its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services on Friday, September 4, due to routine system maintenance.

Maintenance Window and Schedule

The temporary suspension will take place between 00:15 hours and 01:00 hours Indian Standard Time (IST) on Thursday, September 4. The bank noted that the maintenance work could potentially conclude ahead of the announced schedule. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), SBI apologised for the inconvenience and advised customers seeking uninterrupted transactions during the downtime to utilise UPI Lite. "Customers may continue to use UPI Lite Services for uninterrupted service. We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers," SBI said.

SBI UPI Transaction Limits

For normal operations outside the maintenance window, SBI enforces standard regulatory thresholds and transaction caps:

  • Person-to-Person (P2P): Up to 20 transactions per day.
  • Person-to-Merchant (P2M): Subject to applicable daily UPI transaction value limits.
  • Overall Value Limit: INR 1,00,000 for combined daily P2P and P2M transactions.
  • Special Categories: Higher caps apply to specific sectors, including up to INR 2,00,000 for insurance and capital market transactions, and up to INR 5,000,000 for IPO applications through ASBA, the Retail Direct Scheme (RDS), tax payments, hospitals, and educational institutions.
  • International Remittances: Inward and outward remittances through the India-Singapore UPI corridor are capped at the equivalent of 1,000 Singapore dollars.

UPI Lite Features

UPI Lite is designed for small-value transactions and allows users to make payments of up to INR 1,000 without entering their UPI PIN for each transaction. The maximum balance that can be maintained in a UPI Lite wallet is INR 5,000.
