SBI Bank Strike: Will Services Be Hit on September 11? Check Strike Dates, Impact
SBI has warned of possible service disruptions as bank unions plan strikes on September 11, a three-day walkout from September 28-30, and an indefinite strike from October 26. Branch services may be hit, but digital banking including UPI is expected to stay functional throughout.
State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest public sector lender, has informed stock exchanges that banking operations could face disruptions in September and October due to a series of nationwide strikes called by bank employee unions. The industrial action, led by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), comprises a one-day strike on September 11, a three-day walkout from September 28 to 30, and an indefinite continuous strike beginning October 26, 2026.
Disruption Risk Despite Contingency Plans
In a regulatory disclosure filed under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015, SBI stated that while administrative steps have been taken to maintain business as usual, service interruptions remain possible. The bank said it has made arrangements for normal functioning in its branches and offices on the strike days, but that work is likely to be impacted nonetheless. Why Are Bank Employees Going on Strike on September 11?
Branch services such as cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque clearances and administrative processing are the most likely to see delays if employee attendance drops sharply on the designated strike days.
Escalation Timeline And Union Demands
The agitation schedule submitted by the UFBU outlines a structured escalation: a single-day nationwide strike on September 11, a three-day consecutive walkout from September 28 to 30 heading into month-end, and a continuous, indefinite strike from October 26 onward if negotiations fail to resolve pending grievances. Bank Unions Announce Nationwide Strikes on September 11, 28-30 Over Pending Demands.
The UFBU serves as an umbrella platform representing major employee and officer groups across the banking sector, including the All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers' Confederation (AIBOC), National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE), All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA), Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), Indian National Bank Employees Federation (INBEF), and National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW).
The unions' primary demands centre on long-standing operational issues, most notably the implementation of a five-day banking week, which has been awaiting final government notification after initial industry-level consensus, along with a review of the Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) framework and other service-related issues.
Impact On Customers
Digital banking channels, including net banking, mobile banking apps and UPI services, are expected to remain functional around the clock through the strike period.
However, cash replenishment at off-site ATMs and physical branch operations could face backlogs during the multi-day strikes, particularly towards the end of September when banks handle heavy month-end settlements. Customers have been advised to plan essential in-branch transactions well ahead of the planned strike dates.
