In case you have a brother that you have not talked to for some time, May 24 may seem an opportune day to do so. The date is celebrated as the National Brother's Day in the USA, and celebrate the importance of male siblings in the lives of people. Well, as you can guess, it is the American gender twist on what we celebrate as Raksha Bandhan, but without the rakhis and the accompanying frills. Interestingly, there is also a Siblings Day celebrated in the USA, which falls on April 26. National Brother's Day 2019: Date, Significance of the Day to Cherish and Celebrate Your Male Siblings.
So on this special occasion, let's look at some of the Bollywood films that are all about celebrating the bond between the brothers. Interestingly, there are so many movies made on male sibling bonding, especially in the '70s, '80s and the '90s where stars didn't mind sharing the screen with another big name. Towards the recent times, we see less of such movies because of the focus on one big name in the cast. Though we do have a few movies on male sibling love this century too! In this feature, we will look at 11 movies that we recommend you to watch on Brother's Day!
Yaadon Ki Baaraat
Bollywood in the '70s and the '80s love the formula of separating siblings in the childhood, and reuniting them years later as adults. One of the most prominent examples in this genre is Yaadon Ki Baaraat where Dharmendra, Vijay Arora and Tariq. Also, watch out for a young Aamir Khan in the film.
Deewar
Amitabh Bachchan has played 'brother' in different capacities in some very popular movies. So much that we could actually dedicate an entire list to him. However, one of our favourite movies this Yash Chopra classic, where AB and the late Shashi Kapoor play brothers who spar with each other from opposite sides of the law.
Satte Pe Satta
Sorry, but couldn't resist adding another Amitabh Bachchan film here. This remake of Seven Brides For Seven Brothers is heartwarming, funny and thrilling. Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini's chemistry is wonderful, and so is his camaraderie with the actors who play his brothers, namely Sachin, Shakti Kapoor, Kanwaljeet Singh, Sudhir, Paintal and Vikram Sahu.
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is a coming of age sports film with elements of romance and a beautiful score by Jatin-Lalit. But what drives the film is the endearing sibling relationship between Aamir Khan and Mamik's character. The elder brother Ratan (Mamik) is focussed on winning the cycling championship while his younger brother Sanju (Aamir Khan) is quite happy lazing around his brother's illustrious shadow. That's until, things change around in the second half where an unfortunate incident leads to the younger sibling step out of that shadow and become his own.
Ram Lakhan
Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff's onscreen bonding has given us some memorable films, and this Subhash Ghai film is one of their bigger hits. Both the actors play cops in the film. The elder, played by Jackie, is responsible and honest. The younger, played by Anil, is easily manipulated, leading to a clash of egos between the once-loving brothers. Also watch out for their bromance in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's cult thriller, Parinda.
Karan Arjun
This Rakesh Roshan film brings Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan together for the first time on the big screen. Playing two brothers who are reincarnated by getting brutally murdered, both the stars get ample opportunities to shine equally while showing off their now-famous bromance.
Judwaa
Judwaa brings two of Bollywood's favourite sibling tropes together - double roles and siblings separated at birth. This madcap comedy, directed by David Dhawan, has Salman Khan at his entertaining best both as the rowdy Raja and the meek Prem. Not to forget, a chartbuster score from Anu Mallik.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Karan Johar's ambitiously crafted star-vehicle has plenty of entertaining and dramatic moments. One of the most endearing threads in the film is the relationship between the two brothers, played by Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan. Their bonhomie makes us wish that these stars would come again for another movie soon!
Main Hoon Na
Farah Khan's directorial debut has Shah Rukh Khan return to college but with a twist. He plays an Army major assigned to go undercover as a college student and protect an officer's daughter. He also has a personal mission - the same college has his estranged half-brother, played by Zayed Khan, whom he plans to reconcile under his false alias. Main Hoon Na has some fun moments thanks to Shah Rukh Khan's star-power, Farah Khan's breezy direction and the youthful energy of the cast. SRK attempted something similar with Varun Dhawan and Rohit Shetty in Dilwale, but the result was not entirely satisfying.
Race
Most of the films mentioned in the list, has the brothers get together after some strenuous circumstances. Not in the case of this Abbas-Mustan film, though. The thriller has Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna's characters, both trying to kill each other in a game of double-crossing and lust for money.
Kapoor & Sons
Kapoor & Sons is more about the friction between the family members rather than just the siblings. But this Shakun Batra film still manages to find some fine moments that focus on the cold vibes between the two brothers, played by Fawad Khan (excellent here) and Sidharth Malhotra.
